Winkler Hunting Knife - Green Micarta Handle
Winkler Hunting Knife - Green Micarta Handle
n the mid 1970's Daniel Winkler took his abiding love for all things frontier and transposed it into an art form. By 1988 Mr. Winkler had taken his passion for the lifestyle and equipment of an early American frontiersman and transformed it into the practicality of a modern American blade-smith. Creating blades to exceed expectations, and outlive the competition, Daniel Winkler's name is associated with excellence and quality craftsmanship. Each knife endowed with the Winkler name carries with it the burden of high expectations and quality standards that knife lovers have come to expect.
The compact 5-inch 80CRV2 drop-point Carbon steel blade provides plenty of cutting area without sacrificing versatility. Complete in a black Caldwell finish that reduces the risk of rust and eliminates glare. The Winkler hunting knife is a resilient, universal companion. Perfectly suited for hunting, fishing, camping, EDC, and everyday utility needs.
The sculpted green Micarta full-tang handle brings the total length to 9.625 inches, and the weight to a hefty 7.9 ounces. Allowing for leverage on larger projects, and a firm grip for precision tasks. The blade also comes with a Kydex-lined custom fitted leather sheath, a metal belt clip, a leather safe attachment, and a behind the waistband loop for a multitude of carrying preferences.
Overall the Winkler Hunting knife is a perfect utility, defense, and every day carry knife. A great option for anyone seeking a lifetime bladed companion.

I have collected knives for over 30 years and, more importantly, used them. As a former US Army Ranger Long Range Surveillance (LRS/LRRP) soldier, SERE and Survivex training was at the forefront of our lives. With regard to that fact, knives were a vital part of our lives on an almost daily basis. Since I left the Army, I have hiked and camped over much of the world and all over the US. In those years, my tastes and needs have distilled into a desire for a basic utilitarian design that meets all requirements (including aesthetic). The Winkler Hunting Knfe is the one knife that meets all these needs. Its design is beyond ergonomic, so comfortable that I can use it all day every day for any need around the camp without gloves and without the least wear and tear on my hands. No knife meets all needs, but this one comes close. The full flat grind combines with the heft due to the perfect blade thickness to create just the right overall geometry and balance for all camp chores. Choking back on the handle, especially when combined with the use of a lanyard, even makes light chopping tasks easy with this blade. No hotspots ever, from cutting and limbing saplings for shelter to cutting and shaping snare triggers to using it on steak. The look of the knife is timeless, hearkening back to the days of the Long Hunters (albeit in a shorter, more portable/wieldy variation). The graceful lines and attention to detail, fit and finish give the knife an air of heirloom quality. The jimping, in addition to the intentional omission of an annoying thumb ramp (which limits thumb placement and prevents alternative grips), allows any variation of deployment and is beautiful in its simplicity and artistic Native American design. The integral guard formed by the choil eliminates the need for further parts and enhances the simplicity of the knife. It is a joy to hold and gives even greater pleasure to use. The sheath is by far the best I have ever used, allowing for simple and silent deployment and resheathing without the bother of a secondary retention system. And the knife is secure. Period. The variations regarding mounting the sheath to pack/equipment/self are more varied and simple than any other sheathing system in existence. I would advise contacting Winkler Knives in Blowing Rock NC and ordering their sheath system mounting kit. I use a large TekLok, which is secure and allows for rapid exchange from belt to pack if the need arises without having to debelt and deal with other equipment. I also have a pouch type bushcraft sheath with ferro rod holder which I sometimes use. Overall, the Winkler Hunting Knife is the best knife I have ever owned (custom or production) for camping, hiking, survival purposes, bushcrafting, or EDC. It is a perfect blend of all considerations - tactical, EDC, defense, bushcraft, or just sitting at the old desk with a glass of Scotch and gloating over. *It is worth noting that Winkler Knives no longer makes this iteration, so if you want one, now is the time before they're gone.
