Benchmade 940-1 Carbon Fiber Folding Knife
Benchmade 940-1 Carbon Fiber Folding Knife
- Osborne Design - Great for EDC
- CPM S90V Steel Blade
- Carbon Fiber Handle for strength
The Benchmade 940-1 carbon fiber folding knife by master designer Warren Osborne has an omnipotent design that makes it a best-in-class EDC knife. The 940-1, a descendant of the Benchmade 940 carbon fiber knife that was introduced in 2000, has had some changes to make the 940-1 lighter while still maintaining its durability and functionality. Like all other Benchmade products, this folding knife is handmade at their Oregon City, Oregon facilities using the toughest materials and latest technology. Its stainless steel blade and carbon fiber handle give it the strength for numerous everyday carry applications while easily fitting into your pocket for travel. Osborne knives are known for their great feel and ease of use, and this knife is no exception.
One major change made from the original 940 model is the use of American-made CPM-S90V super premium stainless steel for the blade. Manufactured by Crucible Industries, this high-carbon steel also has high vanadium quantities, which give it a hardness rating of 59-61HRC. In other words, it will offer you excellent edge retention along with superior corrosion and wear resistance. This Benchmade carbon fiber knife can be counted on to last through year after year of everyday and outdoor use.
Overall, this knife is 7.87 inches long and only weighs 2.44 ounces. The Benchmade 940-1 has a blade that is 3.40 inches long and 0.115 inches thick. This reverse tanto-style blade is stonewashed and has a flat grind. Inspired by Japanese design, this curved edge blade has a chisel point with a high metal concentration, which is ideal for puncturing objects. It also has a tapered pommel that absorbs heavy impacts. It has plenty of blade to utilize and the weight makes it easy to maneuver. The plain-edge reinforced blade has a beautiful satin finish with accents that look as good as they perform.
Another difference in the Benchmade 940-1 knife you will see from the Benchmade 940 is the use of the dual carbon fiber handles and the addition of blue anodized aluminum barrel spacers. Both of these materials make this an extremely strong yet lightweight knife. Carbon fiber polymers are strong and lightweight, while the way the material reflects light adds to their visual splendor. The contouring of the carbon fiber grips offers impressive grip handling, and when the knife is open, you can see straight through the handles.
Overall, the handle is 4.47 inches long and 0.41 inches thick. When opened, the blade is held in place with the AXIS® lock mechanism. This ambidextrous spring-loaded lock will withstand up to 200 pounds of force - literally, it will not move until you release the pin! You can learn more about the AXIS mechanism in our blog. The 940-1, which is a favorite among many EDC users, has dual thumb studs for easy manual opening with either hand along with a reversible tip-up pocket clip.

I was always a gun guy never a knife guy. Used a Kershaw Leek for hunting specifically field dressing because that's what a buddy of mine sent to buy and the Kershaw chive for EDC.. I did not know that there was such a thing as a $100 knife at the time and Ashley did more research I kept upset with myself and and early 2015 I saw a picture of zero tolerance is ZT0450 which I thought was absolutely beautiful design but it wasn't going to be available until June and I couldn't wait five months so I ended up getting a Benchmade Valet, then exchanging that in buying the 940 -1; A month later perhaps in March 2015 the CT came out and I of course I bought it and of course the following year they came out with carbon fiber scales and I had said as well so now I understand the obsession.. The way you can tell if you really like something is by what you instinctively reach for and I always reach for that 940 and wall was expensive quality is remembered long after cost is forgotten

Great knife. Very light and easy to handle. When I say sharp I mean sharp. I have already ordered 5 more knives. 2 are here and the other 3 have already shipped. All different styles but 4 are Benchmade and 1 is a Zero Tolerence. Thank You Knife Art. Gotta let the bank account build up a little more and you will be hearing from me again.
Benchmade took the already excellent 940 and made it even better. Weight reduction from a carbon fiber frame, an upgraded blade steel from S30V to S90V, all the while the 940-1 retains the qualities that made the 940 a great knife. The blade deployment is butter smooth - almost as good as my William Henrys! The AXIS lock-up is solid, no blade play and perfect centering. With its light weight, this is a knife that disappears once you slip it into your pocket. I've found what is for me, the perfect EDC!
Benchmade has made a fantastic knife. This knife is lightweight and feels great in your hand. Easy to open and fits great clipped in your pocket. Blade holds a nice edge as well. I will likely be purchasing a second 940-1 in the near future.

I think the combination of attributes on this knife makes it one of the best Benchmades ever produced. Ultra light with the carbon fiber scales, and slender for inconspicuous carry. The blade design fulfills a wide variety of utility needs while maintaining good strength. The steel is also a fine match. From my own blade testing S90V maintains the keen edge properties of S30V, only it lasts much longer. It isn't as chip and shock resistant as S30V, but much more durable than M390 which chips badly. However, for a knife that is a light cutter, S90V is a perfect match for this knife design. I love this knife, but just be aware that S90V is pretty tough to sharpen on anything other than diamond stones.
